NRC 0.85 Melamine Foam — Measured Absorption Data & Thickness Guide

Specification-first page
Every figure below is FoamTech’s own published test data — measured absorption by thickness, not a marketing ceiling. If your drawing specifies NRC 0.85, this is the data behind our compliance.

What NRC 0.85 Means in a Melamine Foam Specification

NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) is the average of a material’s sound absorption coefficients at 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz, rounded to the nearest 0.05. A panel rated NRC 0.85 absorbs, on average, 85% of the sound energy striking it across the speech-frequency band — only about 15% reflects back into the room. For a full primer on how the rating is calculated, see our guide to what an NRC sound rating stands for.

In procurement documents, NRC 0.85 is the de-facto acceptance threshold for professional acoustics work: machinery enclosures, plant rooms, studios, railway and marine interiors. Many melamine foam suppliers quote “NRC up to 0.85” as their ceiling. Our measured production range is NRC up to 0.95 on 50–100 mm panels — so a FoamTech panel doesn’t just meet the 0.85 line, it typically clears it with margin.

NRC 0.85 or 0.95 — Which Figure Applies to Your Panel?

Both figures are correct, because NRC is not one fixed number for melamine foam — it climbs with panel thickness. A specification that calls out “NRC 0.85” is setting an acceptance floor; a supplier quoting the top of the range is describing the thickest panel.

In one line: melamine foam reaches NRC up to 0.95, and the figure for any individual panel depends on its thickness — the 250–2000 Hz average rises from roughly 0.65 at 20 mm to 0.95 at 80 mm on our standard acoustic grade (ASTM C423). Use the table below to size the panel against the number your drawing actually specifies.

Published NRC by Thickness

Absorption rises with thickness because thicker panels absorb deeper into the low-frequency band, lifting the 250–2000 Hz average. These are the measured values behind our specification table:

Thickness NRC Typical use
20 mm 0.65 Equipment linings, thin panels
30 mm 0.75 Wall panels, duct liners
40 mm 0.80 Offices, classrooms
50 mm 0.90 Studios, meeting rooms
80 mm 0.95 Plant rooms, machinery enclosures

Practical read: if your specification calls out NRC 0.85, start at 50 mm. If wall depth or weight is constrained, a 40 mm sheet on a 50–100 mm rear air cavity recovers much of the gap at lower material cost — the air gap extends low-frequency absorption the same way added thickness does.

Reverberation-room absorption curve for melamine foam: absorption rises steeply above 500 Hz, which is why the 250–2000 Hz average climbs from 0.65 at 20 mm to 0.95 at 80 mm.

Fire performance matters in exactly the projects that specify NRC 0.85, so the acoustic grade is made from inherently flame-retardant melamine resin — no brominated additives. Chinese-market drawings often cite GB/T 8624 B1, which corresponds to EN 13501-1 Class B-s1, d0; rail and transit projects are supplied against EN 45545-2 project requirements.

Humid or wash-down installations should specify our hydrophobic grades (≥98% water-repellency); formaldehyde emission is not detected in third-party testing, which keeps the material suitable for classrooms, audiology rooms and other occupied spaces.

Applications That Specify NRC 0.85+

  • Machinery enclosures & plant rooms — 80 mm panels, broadband absorption around generators, compressors and test cells.
  • Studios, audiology rooms & offices — wedge and pyramid profiles for speech-band control.
  • Rail & marine interiors — lightweight absorber layers where every kilogram counts; see our melamine acoustic foam insulation page for transit-grade detail.
  • HVAC ductwork & plenums — duct liners at 30–40 mm; hydrophobic grades for humid airstreams, details on the hydrophobic melamine foam page.
  • Industrial equipment & appliance housings — die-cut parts laminated with facings; find your sector in the industries overview.

Why Buyers Source NRC 0.85 Panels from FoamTech

  • Measured range, not a ceiling claim. NRC up to 0.95 across 50-100 mm panels, with ASTM C423 test reports available per order.
  • Capacity that protects schedules. Approximately 300,000 m³ annual melamine foam capacity — container-quantity programmes ship on plan, not on queue.
  • Standards-body involvement. FoamTech took part in drafting QB/T 8216-2026, the melamine foam industry standard — the spec sheet you receive is written by people who helped define the material.
  • Converting in-house. Blocks, sheets, wedge/pyramid profiles, die-cut parts and foil- or fabric-laminated composites, all from one factory (founded 2014, Zhejiang, China).

Frequently Asked Questions

How thick should melamine foam be to reach NRC 0.85?

Per our published thickness table, a 50 mm panel measures NRC 0.90 and an 80 mm panel reaches 0.95 (ASTM C423). If wall depth is limited, a 40 mm sheet measures 0.80 direct-mounted and a rear air cavity closes most of the remaining gap at lower cost than 80 mm solid panels.

Is a higher NRC always the better choice?

Above roughly 0.85, returns diminish: the difference between 0.85 and 0.95 is audible mainly in already-treated rooms, while thickness, coverage and correct placement (first-reflection points, corners, cavity depth) usually change results more than the last 0.05 of NRC. Match the rating to the specification, then optimise mounting.

Does NRC 0.85 mean the foam blocks sound between rooms?

No. NRC measures absorption inside a space. Blocking sound between spaces is transmission loss (STC/Rw), governed by mass and barrier layers. Melamine foam improves NRC dramatically and STC only marginally — for partition projects combine it with a barrier composite.

Can you supply test reports with the NRC values?

Yes. Laboratory reports (ASTM C423 reverberation-room method) supporting the NRC up to 0.95 are available to qualified buyers, and we routinely ship them with sample evaluations so the data can be verified before a purchase order is placed.

Is melamine foam NRC 0.85 or 0.95?

Both are correct — they describe panels of different thickness. On our standard acoustic grade a 50 mm panel measures NRC 0.90 and an 80 mm panel reaches 0.95 (ASTM C423), so melamine foam reaches NRC up to 0.95 and the value for any individual panel depends on its thickness. A specification that calls out NRC 0.85 sets a floor that a 50 mm panel clears.
